Josef Newgarden Wins Second Consecutive Indianapolis 500
Duel with Pato O'Ward on Final Lap
Josef Newgarden has won the 108th Indianapolis 500, becoming the first driver to win back-to-back Indy 500s in 22 years. The race, which was delayed four hours due to inclement weather, came down to a thrilling duel on the final lap between Newgarden and Pato O'Ward.
Newgarden, who started the race in 12th position, made his way to the front of the pack early on. He led for much of the race, but O'Ward, who started in 10th position, challenged him for the lead in the closing laps.
On the final lap, Newgarden and O'Ward ran side-by-side for several turns. Newgarden eventually got the inside line and held on to win by a margin of just 0.069 seconds.
"This is incredible," said Newgarden after the race. "I can't believe we were able to do this again. It's a dream come true."
Newgarden is the first driver to win the Borg-Warner Trophy in consecutive years since Hélio Castroneves in 2001-02.
